Maxwell’s Record Century Propels Australia to Victory

Adelaide:  In a dazzling display of power-hitting prowess, Glenn Maxwell etched his name in the record books with an unbeaten 55-ball 120, guiding Australia to a resounding 34-run victory over West Indies in the second T20I at the Adelaide Oval on Sunday.

Maxwell’s scintillating innings not only propelled Australia to the highest-ever T20I total on home soil but also marked his fifth century in the format, equalling the record set by Rohit Sharma. The right-hander showcased his trademark strokes, including lofted shots over cover, slices over backward point, and jaw-dropping reverse-pulls that left the crowd in awe.

Australia, after a shaky start, found stability through skipper Mitchell Marsh’s aggressive cameo and David Warner’s supporting role. The real carnage, however, began with Maxwell’s arrival, as he dominated the partnership with Marcus Stoinis, contributing 82 runs while Stoinis added 16. Tim David joined the spectacle with an unbroken 95-run stand, propelling Australia to a formidable total of 241/4 in 20 overs.

Chasing the mammoth target, West Indies lost early wickets in the powerplay, and despite Rovman Powell, Andre Russell, and Jason Holder putting up a fight, the margin of defeat remained significant. Powell’s 63 off 36, Russell’s explosive 37 off 16, and Holder’s cameo (28* off 16) showcased the Caribbean team’s power-hitting, but it was not enough to bridge the gap.

Australia’s bowlers, capitalizing on the challenging run chase for West Indies, ensured that the batters were forced to hit down the ground, where the boundaries were longer. Marcus Stoinis emerged as the most successful bowler, claiming three wickets, while Josh Hazlewood chipped in with two, guiding Australia to a comprehensive victory.

As the dust settled at the Adelaide Oval, Australia celebrated not only a convincing win but also Maxwell’s extraordinary century, setting the stage for a thrilling T20I series between the two cricketing powerhouses.
