Massive 7.7 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Myanmar, At Least 20 Dead

Naypyidaw: A devastating 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck northwest Myanmar on Friday, followed by a powerful 6.8 aftershock, leaving at least 20 people dead and causing widespread destruction. The death toll is expected to rise as rescue operations continue, with reports indicating that a mosque in Mandalay City collapsed while people were inside, leaving several feared dead.

The earthquake, which originated northwest of Sagaing at a depth of 10 km, sent strong tremors across Myanmar, Thailand, northeast India, and parts of China. The impact was severe, with metro and rail services in Bangkok temporarily suspended, triggering widespread panic among residents. In Laos, high-rise buildings in Vientiane swayed intensely, adding to the chaos.

Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has convened an urgent crisis meeting and declared a state of emergency in the capital to coordinate relief efforts. The situation in Myanmar remains critical, with reports of collapsed buildings, damaged infrastructure, and severe road damage between Mandalay and Yangon, hampering rescue and relief operations.

Footage from the affected areas reveals crumbling buildings and terrified residents fleeing to safety. Rescue teams in Myanmar have launched extensive search-and-rescue operations, working tirelessly to locate survivors trapped under debris. Authorities have declared a state of emergency and issued an international appeal for aid to support relief and recovery efforts.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed deep concern over the disaster, assuring Myanmar and Thailand of India’s full support. He stated, “Concerned by the situation in the wake of the earthquake in Myanmar and Thailand. Praying for the safety and well-being of everyone. India stands ready to offer all possible assistance. In this regard, asked our authorities to be on standby. Also asked the MEA to remain in touch with the Governments of Myanmar and Thailand.”

As rescue teams continue their efforts, authorities are racing against time to provide medical aid, shelter, and food supplies to those affected by this catastrophic earthquake. The full scale of the damage is yet to be assessed, but the impact has already been devastating, leaving thousands in urgent need of assistance.
