Maiden embarkation of scientists from Indian Ocean Countries onboard Antarctic expedition – Colombo Security Conclave
Goa: In a significant stride towards fostering maritime collaboration, two scientists from Mauritius and one scientist from Bangladesh have embarked on the 43rd Antarctic expedition of India. Led by the National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research, Goa, this groundbreaking initiative underscores the cooperative spirit among the nations of the Colombo Security Conclave (CSC).
The Mauritian and Bangladeshi scientists joined the expedition at Cape Town on December 20, 2023, marking a collaborative effort to advance polar science and strengthen ties in oceanographic research. This unique participation is a direct outcome of the CSC Oceanographers and Hydrographers conference, a maiden event held in November 2022 at Goa and Hyderabad.
This collaborative venture follows a month-long scientific expedition in the Indian Ocean Region in June 2023, where scientists from CSC nations conducted research onboard the ‘Sagar Nidhi.’
The scientists, during their 3-4 month stint in the Antarctic, will engage in collaborative research spanning various disciplines relevant to polar science. This includes gaining insights into Polar logistics and addressing challenges posed by the Polar environment. The participation of scientists from neighbouring countries highlights the commitment to shared scientific exploration and the exchange of knowledge.
This Antarctic expedition serves as a testament to the success of regional collaboration efforts, emphasizing the collective pursuit of scientific excellence and the understanding of the complexities of polar regions. The initiative not only facilitates joint research initiatives but also strengthens diplomatic and scientific ties between the participating nations.
