Leopard Involved in Nuapada Attacks Now on Public Display at Sambalpur Zoo

Bhubaneswar: A male leopard, responsible for the death of two individuals and the injury of another in Nuapada district in 2023, has been transferred for public display at Sambalpur Zoo under the Hirakud Wildlife Division. The leopard, aged about 7-8 years, was captured on November 5, 2023, and brought to the rescue center in Sambalpur Zoo on November 8, 2023.

Following recommendations by the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (PCCF) Wildlife, Odisha, the Central Zoo Authority (CZA) approved the pairing of the male leopard with an existing 6-year-old female leopard at the zoo. On September 9, 2024, the male was introduced to the same night house as the female leopard, though both animals are currently kept in separate chambers to allow for gradual acquaintance.

To ensure their compatibility, the two leopards will be displayed to the public alternately starting from October 1, 2024. It will take an estimated 2-3 months of behavioral observation before they are allowed to cohabit. CCTV cameras have been installed in their chambers and the display enclosure to monitor their behavior around the clock. Physical monitoring teams are also on-site 24/7 to ensure their safety.

In preparation for this development, the leopard enclosure at Sambalpur Zoo was expanded to 550 square meters in 2023, with a glass-view facility completed in 2024 to enhance visitor experience. A 20-foot by 7-foot glass viewing area has been created, providing a clear and immersive view for zoo visitors. In addition, hammocks have been installed in the enclosure as part of an enrichment program for the leopards and other animals like bears, improving their comfort and well-being.
