Khelo India Centres Inaugurated Across All 30 Districts of Odisha to Boost Grassroots Sports

Bhubaneswar: In a significant step towards strengthening grassroots sports infrastructure in the state, Khelo India Centres were officially inaugurated across all 30 districts of Odisha on Sunday. The move is aimed at nurturing young talent and promoting a vibrant sports culture across the state.

Speaking at the launch, Sports and Youth Services Minister Suryabanshi Suraj said the centres have been established within schools, ensuring accessibility for aspiring athletes in both urban and rural areas. “Each centre will receive an annual grant of ₹5 lakh for proper management. The coaches to be appointed will be former champions from the local areas, bringing their expertise and experience to guide the next generation,” the Minister said.

These centres are expected to provide structured training and world-class infrastructure for a range of sports including football, volleyball, hockey, athletics, kho-kho, and kabaddi. “The idea is to provide appropriate training and facilities for young athletes. These centres will play a crucial role in shaping the careers of those who aspire to pursue sports professionally,” Suraj added.

The initiative aligns with the broader vision of the Khelo India programme, which aims to identify promising talent at the grassroots level, offer them exposure to competitive platforms, and extend financial and institutional support for their development.

By reaching every district of Odisha, the government hopes to tap into the state’s diverse talent pool and transform it into a sporting powerhouse. The centres are expected not only to produce future national and international athletes but also to instill a deeper appreciation for sports among the youth.
