Khandagiri Mela to Focus on Cultural Preservation: Ban on Obscene Dance Performances Introduced

Bhubaneswar: In a decisive move to preserve the cultural essence of the Khandagiri Mela, authorities have introduced a ban on obscene dance performances during the popular Jatra shows. The decision was reached after a joint meeting between Jatra committee members and Khandagiri police officials on Tuesday, following widespread concerns about performances deemed disrespectful to Odia traditions.

The Sanatan Seba Samiti, an integral part of the event’s organization, welcomed the move, emphasizing the importance of aligning the Mela with cultural values. “In the presence of the Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Inspector-in-Charge (IIC), and Jatra committee members, it was collectively agreed to ban vulgar dance performances at this year’s Khandagiri Mela. The discussion also revolved around ensuring a disciplined and well-coordinated event,” said a Samiti representative.

To uphold these guidelines, a central committee is being established to oversee the fair’s operations. Each participating Jatra organization has been tasked with nominating two members to join the oversight body. The committee will take shape at a meeting scheduled for tomorrow evening, ensuring a collaborative approach to maintaining the event’s decorum.

A Jatra committee member remarked, “This decision has received unanimous support. The formation of the central committee will help ensure that all performances and activities align with the Mela’s cultural objectives.”

The Khandagiri Mela, known for its vibrant traditions and community engagement, has faced criticism in recent years for allowing content that some view as misaligned with its cultural roots. The ban on inappropriate dance performances marks a significant step toward restoring the festival’s focus on Odisha’s rich heritage and traditions.
