Khandagiri Mela Begins, Blending Spirituality and Cultural Heritage

Bhubaneswar: The much-awaited Khandagiri Mela has commenced at the foothills of Khandagiri and Udaygiri in Bhubaneswar, marking the beginning of a nine-day-long spiritual and cultural extravaganza. This annual fair, which starts on Magha Saptami, draws thousands of saints, devotees, and tourists to partake in its sacred rituals and vibrant celebrations.

As dawn breaks on Magha Saptami, the air is filled with spiritual fervor as sadhus from holy cities like Kashi, Varanasi, and Ayodhya arrive to perform traditional rituals. Many of them take a holy dip at Chandrabhaga Beach in Konark before proceeding to Khandagiri, following an age-old tradition believed to bring divine blessings and purification. The sacred yajna (holy fire ritual) at the Khandagiri foothills is a major highlight, with mantras resonating through the air as devotees gather to witness the spiritual spectacle.

Adding to the grandeur of the occasion, locals from Jagamara take out a vibrant procession carrying the deity Lord Anant Keshari in a palanquin, making their way to Udayagiri foothills at dusk, reinforcing the deep-rooted traditions of the festival.

Legend Behind the Festival

The spiritual significance of Khandagiri and Udayagiri dates back to Hindu mythology. According to ancient texts, Samba, the son of Lord Krishna, was cursed with leprosy by sage Durvasa. Seeking redemption, he prayed to Surya Dev (the Sun God) and bathed in the sacred waters of Chandrabhaga Beach. He then retreated to Khandagiri and Udayagiri, where he meditated and ultimately found healing. This divine association makes these hills a revered site, drawing devotees who seek solace and spiritual rejuvenation.

A Cultural Extravaganza

Beyond its spiritual essence, the Khandagiri Mela is a grand showcase of Odisha’s rich cultural and artistic heritage. The fairgrounds transform into a bustling marketplace, offering a glimpse into the state’s diverse handicrafts. Visitors can explore intricate appliqué work, delicate handmade pottery, and a variety of artisanal wonders, making it a vibrant confluence of faith and craftsmanship.
