ITR Filing Deadline Extended to September 15, 2025 Amid System Updates and Form Revisions

New Delhi: The Income Tax Department has announced a revised deadline for filing Income Tax Returns (ITRs), giving a major breather to individual taxpayers across the country. Returns that were originally due by July 31, 2025, can now be filed until September 15, 2025, following a formal decision by the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT).

The extension comes in the wake of delays in rolling out updated ITR forms and associated filing utilities. Officials confirmed that the department needed additional time to finalize technical changes and ensure the seamless functioning of the e-filing infrastructure after significant revisions to the forms this year.

Citing system readiness as a key concern, the Income Tax Department explained on social media, “This extension will provide more time due to significant revisions in ITR forms, system development needs, and TDS credit reflections. This ensures a smoother and more accurate filing experience for everyone. Formal notification will follow.”

The revised timeline especially benefits salaried individuals and non-auditable taxpayers, who constitute the bulk of return filers. These individuals now have over six weeks of extra time to compile their financial documents, reconcile tax deductions, and complete e-verification without facing last-minute hurdles.

The department emphasized that the decision was taken in the interest of transparency, accuracy, and taxpayer convenience. Industry experts also welcomed the move, stating that the additional time will help avoid errors stemming from new compliance requirements and ensure more efficient processing of returns.
