IPL 2025 Suspended for One Week Amid Escalating India-Pakistan Border Tensions

New Delhi: In a significant development, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced the suspension of the IPL 2025 season for one week, citing rising cross-border tensions between India and Pakistan. The board confirmed that the decision, made in consultation with government authorities and stakeholders, is a precautionary measure in the interest of national security.

The announcement came on Friday following intensified military activity along the northern borders, which included air strikes and drone incursions from Pakistan late Thursday night. Blackouts were reported in Jammu, Udhampur, and Pathankot, prompting heightened security protocols in the region.

A key fixture between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamshala was called off after just 10.1 overs due to the evolving threat. The airport in Dharamshala, along with several others in North India, was closed, leading to the evacuation of players, officials, and broadcasting personnel. All were transported via bus to Jalandhar, from where a special train took them to New Delhi.

In a statement, BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia said, “Further updates regarding the new schedule and venues of the tournament will be announced in due course after a comprehensive assessment of the situation in consultation with relevant authorities and stakeholders.”

The decision was taken by the IPL Governing Council, led by Saikia and IPL Chairman Arun Dhumal, following inputs from multiple franchise owners and broadcasters. Concerns over player safety, logistical uncertainties, and public sentiment were factored into the suspension.

“While the BCCI reposes full faith in the strength and preparedness of our armed forces, the Board considered it prudent to act in the collective interest of all stakeholders,” Saikia said. “We stand firmly with the nation and express our solidarity with the Government of India, the Armed Forces, and the people of our country.”

Saikia also lauded the ongoing military response, Operation Sindoor, calling the armed forces’ efforts “heroic” in the face of recent aggression and a terror attack. “While cricket remains a national passion, there is nothing greater than the nation and its sovereignty,” he added.

The suspension affects the final stretch of IPL 2025, with 12 league-stage games and the playoff rounds remaining. So far, 58 matches have been completed this season. The BCCI is yet to confirm whether the tournament will resume immediately after the one-week hiatus or if it will require a revised schedule and venues.

All ten franchises have been notified of the pause, and preparations are underway to secure the safe departure and lodging of players, support staff, and international personnel, pending an advisory from the Ministry of External Affairs expected later today.
