Mumbai: In a historic moment that celebrates the spirit of Nari Shakti, India launched its first Tri-Services All-Women Circumnavigation Sailing Expedition, titled “Samudra Pradakshina”, from the Indian Naval Watermanship Training Centre in Colaba, Mumbai. The 55-day voyage was officially flagged off by Lt Gen AK Ramesh, Commandant, College of Military Engineering (CME).
The expedition features a 12-member all-women crew drawn from the Indian Army, Indian Navy, and Indian Air Force, who will sail aboard the Indian Armed Services Vessel (IASV) Triveni on a challenging journey of 4,000 nautical miles to Seychelles and back.
More than just a maritime journey, Samudra Pradakshina is a symbol of empowerment and resilience, serving as a preparatory phase for a more ambitious global circumnavigation mission planned for 2026. The initiative showcases the evolving role of women in India’s defence forces and aims to promote gender parity in maritime and military operations.
Chosen from 41 passionate volunteers, the 12 officers have undergone intensive two-year training in ocean sailing. Their preparation involved a series of increasingly complex expeditions, tackling real-life challenges including adverse weather, mechanical failures, and physical strain. Their dedication and perseverance reflect a powerful message of determination and teamwork on the high seas.
“This expedition is a living tribute to the legendary women warriors of India — Rani Velu Nachiyar, Rani Durgavati, and Rani Lakshmi Bai — whose courage and leadership continue to inspire generations,” a defence official noted during the ceremony.
Samudra Pradakshina not only reinforces India’s commitment to inclusivity and excellence in maritime endeavours, but also underlines the growing presence of women in operational roles across the armed forces.
The crew is expected to return to Mumbai on May 30, 2025, when a formal flag-in ceremony will celebrate the successful completion of this groundbreaking voyage.
