India’s First Port-Based Green Hydrogen Plant Moves Forward as Electrolysers Flagged Off for Kandla

New Delhi: In a major step towards achieving India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission, Union Minister for Ports, Shipping & Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal virtually flagged off electrolysers for the upcoming Green Hydrogen plant at Deendayal Port Authority (DPA), Kandla today. The initiative marks a significant milestone in India’s transition to clean energy and the decarbonization of the maritime sector.

Speaking at the event, Sonowal highlighted the project’s importance, stating, “This marks a key milestone in DPA Kandla’s mission to become India’s leading Green Hydrogen hub. Under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, we are spearheading advanced green energy initiatives, setting a benchmark for sustainable port operations across the country.”

The electrolysers, manufactured by L&T under the Make-in-India initiative, will be deployed at a 1 MW Green Hydrogen Plant at DPA Kandla, which is expected to be operational by July 2025. The plant will produce 18 kg of hydrogen per hour, making it India’s first port-based Green Hydrogen facility using indigenous electrolysers.

Looking ahead, DPA Kandla is also planning to expand its operations into Green Ammonia production, further supporting India’s Net Zero goals. The initiative aims to scale up the hydrogen plant’s capacity from 1 MW to 10 MW in the future, reinforcing the country’s commitment to clean energy.

The flag-off ceremony, held virtually, was attended by T.K. Ramachandran, Secretary, Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sushil Kumar Singh, Chairman, DPA, and Derek M. Shah, Senior Vice President & Head, L&T Green Energy. The electrolysers were dispatched from L&T’s Hazira manufacturing facility, marking another step in India’s push for self-reliance in green energy technology.
