Indian Women’s Hockey Team Finishes Runners-Up in FIH Hockey5s Women’s World Cup 2024

Muscat: In a hard-fought battle, the Indian Women’s Hockey Team faced a 2-7 defeat against the Netherlands in the Final of the FIH Hockey5s Women’s World Cup 2024. Despite the loss, Hockey India has acknowledged the exemplary performance of the team, announcing a cash award of Rs 3 Lakhs for each player and Rs 1.5 Lakhs for each support staff member.

The final clash began with both teams seeking opportunities, but the Netherlands quickly seized control. Janneke van de Venne’s long-range shot, deflected off Indian Goalkeeper Rajani Etimarpu, marked the opening goal for the Netherlands. Bente van der Veldt swiftly followed, doubling the lead with a powerful shot. The Netherlands continued their dominance, with Bente van der Veldt scoring her second, and Lana Kalse and Sosha Benninga adding to the tally.

With four minutes remaining in the first half, Lana Kalse capitalized on a loose ball, extending the lead to 4-0. Sosha Benninga then showcased skillful play, increasing the Netherlands’ advantage. Janneke van de Venne scored again, concluding the first half with a commanding 6-0 lead for the Netherlands.

The second half witnessed a resilient Indian team, as Jyoti Chhatri and Rutuja Dadaso Pisal found the net, narrowing the scoreline to 6-2. Despite their efforts, a counterattack goal from Lana Kalse reestablished the Netherlands’ dominance with a 7-2 lead. India pressed on, testing Netherlands’ goalkeeper Kiki Gunneman, but the Dutch defense held firm. In the dying moments, the Netherlands was awarded a penalty stroke, but Rajani’s heroic save capped the game at 7-2 in favor of the Netherlands.

Hockey India commended the team’s spirited performance in the tournament, reflecting the nation’s pride in their journey to the final.
