Indian Women’s Hockey Team Falls Short Against Belgium in FIH Pro League Match

Antwerp: In a closely-fought encounter, the Indian Women’s Hockey Team succumbed to a 0-2 defeat against Belgium in their second match of the European leg of the FIH Hockey Pro League 2023/24. Despite a valiant effort, India couldn’t thwart the Belgian attack, with Alexia ‘T Serstevens (34’) and Louise Dewaet (36’) finding the back of the net for the hosts.

India commenced the match with an aggressive stance, earning an early penalty corner. However, they couldn’t convert the opportunity into a goal. Despite Belgium’s reliance on counter-attacks, India’s steadfast defense denied them any breakthroughs in the opening quarter.

The second quarter saw Belgium intensify their pressure, but India managed to hold their ground, testing the Belgian defense with swift passes and possession. Despite both teams’ efforts, the deadlock remained unbroken at halftime.

Belgium seized control in the third quarter, scoring two quick goals through Serstevens and Dewaet. Despite India’s attempts to retaliate, they couldn’t find the net, missing out on a late penalty corner.

In the final quarter, India pushed forward relentlessly but failed to breach Belgium’s defense. Despite dominating possession, they couldn’t alter the scoreline, and the match concluded with Belgium securing a 2-0 victory.

Notably, Indian forward Deepika Soreng made her senior team debut in the match.

The Indian Women’s Hockey Team will face Belgium once again in their upcoming match at 1730hrs IST on 25th May, aiming to bounce back from this defeat.
