Indian Railways Pioneers Green Revolution with Ambitious 2030 Target

New Delhi: The Ministry of Railways is spearheading a transformative journey to make Indian Railways a trailblazer in environmental sustainability with the ambitious vision of becoming Green Railways by 2030. The ministry has implemented a series of groundbreaking initiatives aimed at mitigating global warming and combating climate change.

The comprehensive strategy includes Railway Electrification, enhancing energy efficiency across locomotives, trains, and fixed installations, green certifications for installations and stations, and a shift to renewable energy sources, all designed to achieve net-zero carbon emissions.

In its commitment to adopting eco-friendly practices, Indian Railways has made significant strides in various areas:

1. Solar Power: The total installed capacity has reached an impressive 216.36 MW. In the year 2023 alone, 71.37 MW of solar power was added, encompassing 21.37 MW on rooftops and 50 MW on land. This substantial increase reflects Indian Railways’ dedication to harnessing solar energy as a key component of its green agenda.

2. Wind Power: With a total installed capacity of 103.4 MW, Indian Railways continues to explore alternative energy sources. The inclusion of wind power in its portfolio underlines a multifaceted approach towards achieving sustainable and renewable energy goals.

In a monumental move towards global collaboration for sustainability, Indian Railways, the Government of India, and the United States Agency for International Development/India (USAID/India) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on June 14, 2023. The MoU is focused on collaborative efforts in the realm of Renewable energy and Energy efficiency, marking a significant stride towards reducing carbon footprints.
