Indian Railways Introduces Budget-Friendly Meals for Unreserved Passengers

Bhubaneswar: Indian Railways in collaboration with Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC), has launched a new initiative to offer hygienic meals and snacks at affordable prices, particularly targeting passengers traveling in unreserved coaches.

With the anticipation of increased passenger traffic during the upcoming summer months, Indian Railways acknowledges the challenges faced by those traveling in unreserved compartments, who often lack access to convenient and budget-friendly meal options.

The initiative introduces a two-fold approach:

Economy Meals: Priced at an economical Rs. 20/-, these meals provide passengers with a satisfying and affordable dining option while on the move.
Snack Meals: For those seeking a lighter bite, snack meals are available at Rs. 50/-.
To ensure accessibility, these meals and water will be available at counters strategically located near general second-class (GS) coaches on platforms. This setup allows passengers to purchase refreshments directly from these counters, eliminating the hassle of searching for vendors or stepping outside the station premises.

Successfully piloted at approximately 51 stations last year, the program has now been significantly expanded. Currently operational at over 100 stations with nearly 150 counters in total, the initiative is poised for further growth, with plans to include additional stations in the near future.

This initiative offers a tangible benefit for passengers, particularly those traveling in General Class coaches. The availability of readily accessible, budget-friendly meals and snacks ensures that travelers can enjoy a comfortable journey throughout.

In the jurisdiction of the East Coast Railway (ECoR), economy meals are being provided to passengers at key railway stations including Khurda Road & Palasa in the Khurda Road Division; Sambalpur, Titilagarh, Balangir, Kantabanji of the Sambalpur Division; and at Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram & Srikakulam Railway Stations in the Waltair Railway Division.
