Indian Navy’s INS Talwar Arrives in South Africa for IBSAMAR VIII Naval Exercise

Simon’s Town, South Africa: The Indian Navy’s frontline stealth frigate, INS Talwar, arrived at Simon’s Town, South Africa, on October 6 to participate in the eighth edition of IBSAMAR, a joint multinational maritime exercise involving the navies of India, Brazil, and South Africa. The exercise, which runs from October 6 to 18, 2024, aims to boost interoperability and strengthen cohesion between the three navies.

IBSAMAR VIII will focus on Blue Water Naval Warfare, encompassing key operational areas such as Surface and Anti-Air Warfare. The exercise is structured in two phases: a harbour phase and a sea phase. During the harbour phase, the three navies will engage in professional exchanges, damage control and firefighting drills, visit, board, search, and seizure (VBSS) drills, aviation safety discussions, joint diving operations, and cross-boarding activities. Additional events include an Ocean Governance seminar, sports interactions, cross-deck visits, and collaboration between Special Forces and Junior Officers.

These multilateral interactions foster friendship and build trust, enhancing naval cooperation among like-minded nations and contributing to a peaceful and secure maritime domain. The joint effort reflects a shared commitment to maintaining a positive maritime environment.

Defence ties between India and South Africa have been growing stronger, with operational sea training and submarine rescue support initiated following the 12th edition of Navy-to-Navy talks held in New Delhi in August 2024. INS Talwar’s visit reinforces India’s dedication to fostering international collaboration and mutual growth.

Commissioned on June 18, 2003, INS Talwar is part of the Indian Navy’s Western Fleet and is based in Mumbai under the Western Naval Command. The ship is currently commanded by Captain Jithu George and continues to play a vital role in India’s naval capabilities.
