Indian Navy to Commission MH 60R Seahawk Helicopter at INS Garuda, Kochi

Kochi: The Indian Navy is set to mark a momentous occasion in its defense modernization journey with the commissioning of the MH 60R Seahawk multi-role helicopter on March 6, 2024, at INS Garuda, Kochi. The Seahawk squadron will be commissioned as INAS 334, representing a significant leap in India’s maritime capabilities. These helicopters are part of the 24-aircraft Foreign Military Sales (FMS) contract signed with the US government in February 2020.

The induction of the Seahawks will enhance the Indian Navy’s maritime prowess, providing advanced capabilities for anti-submarine warfare (ASW), anti-surface warfare (ASuW), search and rescue (SAR), medical evacuation (MEDEVAC), and vertical replenishment (VERTREP). The helicopters have undergone rigorous testing in Indian Reference Atmosphere (IRA) conditions and are fully integrated into the Fleet.

The MH 60R Seahawk is equipped with an advanced weapons, sensors, and avionics suite, making it suitable for addressing both conventional and asymmetric threats. Its deployment in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) will significantly contribute to strengthening the Indian Navy’s maritime presence, serving as a deterrent against potential threats and ensuring a secure and safe environment in this strategically crucial region.

The commissioning of the Seahawks aligns with the Indian Navy’s commitment to fortifying maritime security and complements the Government of India’s visionary goal of ensuring “Security And Growth for All in the Region” (SAGAR). The induction of these helicopters marks a pivotal moment in India’s defense capabilities, showcasing the nation’s dedication to maintaining peace and security in the maritime domain.
