Gulf of Aden: The Palau-flagged MV Islander faced a critical situation on February 22, 2024, after coming under an apparent drone or missile attack, resulting in a fire on board. Acting promptly upon receiving the distress call, the Indian Navy’s destroyer, deployed for maritime security operations in the Gulf of Aden, reached the vessel’s location in the afternoon of the same day.
Upon arrival, Indian Naval Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) specialists boarded the vessel, meticulously assessing and neutralizing any residual risks associated with the attack. Following a thorough examination, the ship was declared safe for onward transit.
Responding to the Master’s request, a medical team from the Indian Navy also embarked on the MV Islander to provide necessary medical assistance to an injured crew member, underscoring the holistic approach of the rescue operation.
The incident highlights the unwavering commitment of the Indian Navy to the safety and security of merchant shipping and seafarers in the region. The naval forces’ swift and effective response not only secured the affected vessel but also demonstrated the resolve to combat maritime threats and ensure the integrity of international waters.
The Indian Navy’s relentless efforts in this operation serve as a testament to its dedication to maintaining peace and stability in maritime regions, contributing to global maritime security efforts.
