Indian Navy Hosts Third MAHASAGAR Virtual Interaction with Indian Ocean Region Maritime Leaders

New Delhi: The Indian Navy conducted the third edition of its high-level virtual interaction, MAHASAGAR, today, as Admiral Dinesh Kumar Tripathi, Chief of the Naval Staff, engaged with Heads of Navies, Maritime Agencies, and senior leaders from Indian Ocean Region (IOR) littoral nations. Representatives from Bangladesh, Comoros, Kenya, Madagascar, Maldives, Mauritius, Mozambique, Seychelles, Sri Lanka, and Tanzania participated in the dialogue centered on the theme, “Training Cooperation to Mitigate Common Maritime Security Challenges in IOR.”

MAHASAGAR, meaning “vast ocean” in Hindi, serves as the Indian Navy’s flagship initiative for fostering regional maritime cooperation. Established in 2023, this bi-annual interaction aims to promote Security And Growth for All in the Region (SAGAR), a strategic vision for collaborative maritime security. The initiative has been widely welcomed by participating IOR nations, enabling constructive discourse on addressing shared security challenges.

In this edition, Admiral Tripathi and other maritime leaders discussed the importance of quality training and the potential for enhanced training cooperation across the region. The leaders highlighted the need to build robust capacities and skilled personnel to tackle the common maritime challenges confronting IOR nations, including piracy, illegal fishing, and trafficking.

The focus on training cooperation underscores the increasing commitment among IOR nations to strengthen maritime security by developing capable, well-trained naval forces that can effectively respond to regional threats. Through this initiative, the Indian Navy continues to foster a cooperative maritime environment in the Indian Ocean Region, reinforcing India’s dedication to shared regional stability.
