Indian Coast Guard Rescues Stranded Fishing Boat Amid Challenging Conditions

Kochi: In a remarkable display of swift response and maritime expertise, the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) successfully conducted a sea-air rescue operation to save the Indian Fishing Boat (IFB) Aashni and its 11 crew members, stranded approximately 80 nautical miles off Kochi, Kerala. The operation, executed amid heavy rain and adverse weather conditions, rescued the vessel from imminent danger.

The IFB Aashni faced critical challenges after suffering hull rupture near the keel, leading to flooding and loss of propulsion, endangering the safety of its crew. The distress call was promptly picked up by an ICG Dornier aircraft during maritime surveillance on the night of July 16, 2024. Upon locating the distressed vessel, the ICG swiftly mobilized resources for the rescue mission.

The ICG District Headquarters No 4 (Kerala & Mahe) immediately diverted the patrolling ICG ship Saksham to rendezvous with the IFB Aashni. Reinforcing the operation, another ICG vessel, Abhinav, and an Advanced Light Helicopter were deployed to assist in the rescue efforts.

A technical team from the ICG boarded the stricken IFB Aashni to initiate de-flooding operations and provide critical assistance to the crew. Despite challenging conditions, all 11 crew members were successfully evacuated from the vessel, ensuring their safety and well-being.

Following the rescue operation, the IFB Aashni was transferred to the custody of the Fisheries Department for further necessary actions. This operation underscores the ICG’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding the country’s maritime boundaries and ensuring the safety of seafarers in distress.
