Indian Army Contingent Departs for India-Japan Joint Military Exercise DHARMA GUARDIAN 2025

New Delhi: The Indian Army contingent today departed for Japan to participate in the 6th edition of India-Japan Joint Military Exercise DHARMA GUARDIAN, set to take place at the East Fuji Manoeuvre Training Area from February 24 to March 9, 2025. The annual exercise, which alternates between India and Japan, was last conducted in Rajasthan in February-March 2024.

The Indian contingent, comprising 120 personnel, will primarily include troops from a battalion of the MADRAS Regiment, along with personnel from other arms and services. The Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF) will be represented by troops from the 34th Infantry Regiment, bringing a similar strength of personnel to the joint military exercise.

The core objective of DHARMA GUARDIAN is to enhance interoperability between the two forces, focusing on joint urban warfare and counter-terrorism operations under a UN mandate. The training will emphasize physical endurance, joint tactical drills, and strategic planning, enabling both armies to refine their combat skills, disaster response strategies, and operational coordination.

The exercise builds on the momentum of the Chief of the Army Staff’s visit to Japan in October 2024, further solidifying bilateral defence cooperation. It reflects the shared commitment of India and Japan towards regional peace, security, and stability while reinforcing their common vision of a free, open, and inclusive Indo-Pacific.

Beyond military collaboration, Exercise DHARMA GUARDIAN fosters strong military-to-military ties and promotes cultural understanding between the two nations. The joint drills serve as a testament to the enduring bond of trust and cooperation between India and Japan, strengthening their partnership in addressing emerging security challenges in the region.
