Indian Army and Indian Oil Corporation Limited Initiate Hydrogen Fuel Cell Bus Trials

New Delhi: Demonstrating a strong commitment to green and sustainable transport solutions, the Indian Army has partnered with Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) to conduct demonstration trials of Hydrogen Fuel Cell Bus technology. This collaboration marks a significant step in the Army’s ongoing efforts towards innovation and environmental stewardship.

The partnership was formalized through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Indian Army and IOCL in the presence of General Manoj Pande, Chief of the Army Staff (COAS), and Shrikant Madhav Vaidya, Chairman of Indian Oil. As part of this initiative, the Indian Army received one Hydrogen Fuel Cell Bus, signaling the commencement of a mutually beneficial partnership focused on fostering innovation and advancing sustainable transport solutions.

Hydrogen Fuel Cell technology presents a clean and efficient alternative to traditional fuel sources by converting hydrogen gas into electricity through an electro-chemical process. This process produces only water vapour as a byproduct, ensuring zero emissions and contributing to a reduction in environmental pollution.

The Hydrogen Fuel Cell Bus, with a seating capacity of 37 passengers, promises an impressive mileage of 250-300 km on a full 30 kg onboard tank of hydrogen fuel. This initiative is expected to pave the way for broader adoption of clean energy solutions within the Indian Army and beyond.

This collaboration follows a notable milestone on 21st March 2023, when the Indian Army became the first government entity to sign an MoU with National Thermal Power Corporation Renewable Energy Limited for the installation of Green Hydrogen-based Microgrid Power Plants along the Northern Borders. A pilot project is currently being set up in Chushul, where a 200-kilowatt Green Hydrogen-based microgrid will provide 24×7 clean electricity to troops deployed in challenging terrain and extreme climatic conditions.

General Manoj Pande highlighted the significance of this initiative, stating, “The partnership with IOCL underscores our commitment to adopting innovative and sustainable technologies. The Hydrogen Fuel Cell Bus project is a step towards ensuring our operations are environmentally responsible.”

Shrikant Madhav Vaidya added, “Indian Oil is proud to support the Indian Army in this groundbreaking initiative. Our collaboration aims to promote sustainable and green transport solutions that can have a lasting impact on our environment.”
