Antigua: India secured a commanding 50-run victory over Bangladesh, ascending to the top of Group 1 in the Super 8s at the T20 World Cup 2024. The ‘Men in Blue’ dominated the Bangla Tigers at the Antigua Cricket Ground, leaving Nazmul Hossain Shanto’s team on the brink of elimination with only one match remaining.
Opting to field first, Bangladesh’s decision backfired as Indian openers Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli provided a stellar start. Despite this, Rohit Sharma was soon outfoxed by a slower delivery from Shakib Al Hasan, leading to a catch by Jaker Ali. Virat Kohli, who seemed set for a significant score, was dismissed by Tanzim Hasan, stalling India’s momentum. Tanzim further rattled India by dismissing Suryakumar Yadav immediately after he hit a six.
Nevertheless, vice-captain Hardik Pandya’s aggressive fifty propelled India to a formidable 196/5 in their 20 overs, showcasing the depth of India’s batting prowess.
In response, Bangladesh’s openers started well but failed to convert their promising start into substantial scores. Hardik Pandya struck early, providing India with the crucial breakthrough. Consistent and disciplined bowling from India restricted Bangladesh to 146/8 in their 20 overs, extinguishing any hopes of a successful chase.
Kuldeep Yadav emerged as the standout bowler with impressive figures of 3/19 in his 4 overs, while Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh each claimed two wickets, further tightening India’s grip on the match.
Hardik Pandya, for his all-around performance, including a quickfire half-century and a crucial wicket, was rightfully awarded the Player of the Match.
With this victory, India has accumulated 4 points and taken a significant step towards securing a spot in the semi-finals, highlighting their dominant form in the tournament. On the other hand, Bangladesh’s chances of advancing now hinge on a miraculous turn of events in their final match.
