India Takes a Major Leap in Aviation Manufacturing with Airbus-Mahindra H130 Helicopter Fuselage Contract

New Delhi: In a landmark move for India’s aviation and aerospace industry, Union Minister for Civil Aviation Ram Mohan Naidu today chaired the signing ceremony of a key manufacturing contract between Airbus and Mahindra Aerostructures Pvt. Ltd. for the H130 helicopter fuselage. The ceremony, held at the Ministry of Civil Aviation in New Delhi, marks a pivotal moment in strengthening India’s global standing in aircraft component manufacturing.

The event was attended by top dignitaries, including Civil Aviation Secretary Vumlunmang Vualnam, Airbus India & South Asia President & MD Remi Maillard, Mahindra Group CEO & MD Dr. Anish Shah, and senior leadership from both companies.

The partnership is a significant step in advancing the ‘Make in India’ and ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ initiatives championed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, aiming to position India as a key player in the global aerospace value chain.

“This contract for the H130 helicopter fuselage is a testament to the confidence that global giants like Airbus have in India’s manufacturing capabilities,” said Minister Ram Mohan Naidu. “Mahindra Aerostructures, despite being a relatively young entrant, has delivered world-class aerospace assemblies, reinforcing India’s ability to lead in precision manufacturing.”

Highlighting the country’s aviation trajectory, the Minister noted:

  • India is on track to become one of the world’s largest civil aviation markets, with over 2,200 aircraft expected to be added to its fleet over the next two decades.
  • Passenger traffic is projected to reach 630 million annually by 2030, growing at a rate of 6–8% CAGR.
  • The domestic aerospace manufacturing market has the potential to become a $10 billion industry, covering everything from structural components to avionics and systems integration.

He also lauded the contribution of Indian MSMEs and startups, which now export over $2 billion worth of components annually to aviation giants like Airbus and Boeing.

This agreement builds upon the momentum from a high-level meeting chaired by the Minister in February 2025, which brought together policymakers, industry leaders, and experts to formulate a strategic roadmap for boosting indigenous aircraft component production.

Speaking at the event, Civil Aviation Secretary Vumlunmang Vualnam stressed the broader impact of the H130 fuselage contract: “It will bring advanced technologies, create employment, and stimulate the development of domestic MRO (Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul) capabilities and a robust aerospace manufacturing base.”

The Airbus-Mahindra collaboration joins a growing list of major aviation manufacturing initiatives in India. Notably:

The C295 military aircraft assembly line, inaugurated jointly by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Spanish PM Pedro Sánchez, has already showcased India’s rising stature in defense and aviation production.

The upcoming H125 helicopter final assembly line further adds to India’s evolving aerospace ecosystem.

With Airbus expanding its footprint in India, and Indian companies stepping up as reliable partners in advanced manufacturing, today’s agreement represents a new benchmark in Indo-European industrial collaboration.
