Ahmedabad: India scripted history by successfully defending the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup title after a commanding 96-run victory over New Zealand in the final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday, becoming the first team to retain the trophy.
Led by captain Suryakumar Yadav, India lifted their third T20 World Cup crown after posting a massive 255/5 in 20 overs. Opener Sanju Samson led the charge with a blistering 89 off 46 balls, while Abhishek Sharma smashed 52 off 21 balls and Ishan Kishan added a quick 54 off 25 deliveries to power India to the tournament’s highest total.
In reply, New Zealand struggled against India’s disciplined bowling attack and were bowled out for 159 in 19 overs. Jasprit Bumrah starred with the ball, claiming 4/15, while Axar Patel picked up 3/27 to seal a comprehensive victory.
The win also ended India’s long-standing hoodoo against New Zealand in the T20 World Cup and marked a historic triumph for the hosts in front of a packed crowd in Ahmedabad.
