India Ramps Up Wind Power Push on Global Wind Day 2025, Minister Joshi Unveils Strategic Roadmaps

Bengaluru: Marking Global Wind Day 2025, Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi reaffirmed India’s unwavering commitment to clean energy, declaring wind power as the cornerstone of India’s renewable energy strategy. Addressing a stakeholders’ conference in Bengaluru, Joshi underscored the critical role wind energy plays in meeting India’s ambitious climate goals and driving its aspiration to become a global manufacturing hub.

“Wind energy is not just a part of our renewable strategy—it is at the very heart of Atmanirbhar Bharat,” the Minister asserted. He emphasized that India aims to generate 50% of its power capacity from non-fossil fuel sources by 2030 and achieve net-zero emissions by 2070.

Union Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy Shripad Yesso Naik and Karnataka Energy Minister K.G. George were also present at the event.

Reflecting on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision, Joshi noted that renewable energy must power India’s growing manufacturing sector, while conventional energy should be used to meet household consumption. “To realize this vision, renewable energy production, storage, and integration must scale rapidly. Once India emerges as a global manufacturing powerhouse, it must be ready to meet the energy demands of its industries through clean sources,” he said.

India has already made significant strides in this direction. With the fourth-largest installed wind power capacity globally and ranking third among renewable energy producers, India has transformed its energy landscape in just a decade. “No one imagined this progress ten years ago, but today it’s a reality,” Joshi noted.

The Minister identified three key priorities for advancing the wind energy sector:

1. Hybrid Integration: Combining wind with solar and storage technologies (like Battery Energy Storage Systems) to ensure 24/7 clean power and grid stability.

2. Competitive Tariffs: Bringing down the cost of wind energy from the current ₹3.90 per unit to make it more viable.

3. Efficient Manufacturing: Enhancing domestic manufacturing capabilities to not only meet national targets but also position India as a global export leader.

To reinforce this momentum, the government has increased the renewable energy budget by a substantial 53% this year, allocating ₹26,549 crore, with a major share directed toward wind energy.

Joshi urged state governments to take the lead in this transition by addressing land acquisition and transmission bottlenecks swiftly. “The shift to renewable energy is not a choice, it is inevitable. This is the time for execution—not hesitation,” he declared.

Highlighting India’s manufacturing strength, the Minister shared that 14 Indian companies are producing 33 wind turbine models, ranging from 225 kW to 5.2 MW. These are not only meeting domestic demand but are globally cost-competitive.

To unlock India’s full wind energy potential, Joshi outlined five national priorities:

• Expanding wind projects into new states like Madhya Pradesh, Telangana, and Odisha.

• Launching the offshore wind sector with 4 GW of leasing zones identified off Gujarat and Tamil Nadu.

• Developing firm green power strategies by integrating wind with storage-based business models.

• Modernising the grid using AI-based forecasting for better integration of variable renewable sources.

• Boosting local manufacturing across the entire wind energy value chain.

During the event, Joshi released two strategic reports: the Wind Energy Roadmap and the Wind Manufacturing Roadmap, calling them “blueprints that will guide India’s wind energy journey in the coming years.”

States that demonstrated exceptional performance in wind capacity addition were also recognized at the conference. Karnataka topped the list with 1,331.48 MW added, followed by Tamil Nadu (1,136.37 MW) and Gujarat (954.76 MW).
