India Launches Climate-Smart Agro-Textile Demonstration Center in Gujarat

Navsari, Gujarat: In a groundbreaking initiative to revolutionize agriculture, the Ministry of Textiles, in collaboration with the Synthetic & Art Silk Mills’ Research Association (SASMIRA), inaugurated the Climate Smart Agro-Textile Demonstration Center in Navsari. The event, graced by C.R. Patil, Hon’ble Minister of Jal Shakti, marked a significant stride toward sustainable farming practices in India.

Spread across 15,000 square meters, the demonstration center serves as a hub for education and practical training on the application of Agro-Textile technologies. It features live demonstrations of products such as shade nets (for vertical farming and medicinal nurseries), ground covers (natural and HDPE), vermicomposting systems, pond liners, and crop covers. Operated by SASMIRA for three years, the center will oversee eight crop cycles, providing a real-world evaluation of these innovative solutions.

Equipped with IoT-based monitoring systems, the facility tracks real-time conditions, crop yield, and growth performance. It also plans to host seminars and workshops to educate farmers and stakeholders about the benefits of Agro-Textiles.

In his inaugural address, C.R. Patil highlighted the critical role of Agro-Textiles in improving productivity and conserving resources. “Agro-Textiles are transformative solutions that can enhance crop yields while ensuring sustainable resource management. I urge farmers to visit this center and integrate these technologies into their practices for better outcomes,” he said.

This initiative aligns with the Ministry of Textiles’ National Technical Textiles Mission (NTTM), which aims to promote technical textiles in various sectors, including agriculture.

Raghavjibhai Patel, Gujarat’s Cabinet Minister of Agriculture, assured the state’s full support for the project, suggesting collaborative efforts with state governments to expand the adoption of Agro-Textiles.

Dr. Z.P. Patel, Vice Chancellor of Navsari Agricultural University, emphasized the center’s role in bridging the gap between academic research and practical farming. “This center provides farmers with cutting-edge tools and knowledge to boost productivity while conserving resources,” he remarked.

Rajeev Saxena, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Textiles, reaffirmed the Ministry’s dedication to fostering the adoption of technical textiles. “This demonstration center reflects our commitment to empowering farmers and driving innovation in agriculture through technical textiles,” he stated.

The Climate Smart Agro-Textile Demonstration Center represents a critical step in India’s agricultural transformation. By showcasing innovative solutions and offering practical training, the center aims to empower farmers, enhance crop productivity, and advance sustainable farming practices, paving the way for a resilient agricultural future.
