India Hosts Landmark Seminar on National Critical Minerals Mission

New Delhi: To bolster India’s position in the global green technology sector, the Ministry of Mines successfully hosted the Budget Seminar on the National Critical Minerals Mission today in New Delhi. This event marks a major milestone in India’s efforts to secure its supply of essential raw materials, vital for economic growth and the transition to net-zero emissions.

The seminar aligns with the Union Budget 2024-25, where Union Finance Minister  Nirmala Sitharaman announced the establishment of the National Critical Minerals Mission. The initiative aims to make India Atmanirbhar (self-reliant) in the raw materials necessary for its economic growth and green transition. The Mission is set to play a pivotal role in ensuring the country’s leadership in the critical minerals sector, crucial for the development of advanced technologies and sustainable industries.

Dr. Veena Kumari Dermal, Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Mines, delivered an extensive presentation on the proposed National Critical Minerals Mission. Her address outlined key strategies and initiatives, including enhancing domestic exploration, acquiring overseas assets, implementing robust recycling processes, and establishing responsible frameworks for industries that rely on these critical minerals.

The seminar served as a platform for collaboration among industry leaders, innovative start-ups, government officials, scientists, academia, and policy experts. Participants engaged in detailed discussions on various focus areas of the Mission, such as incentivizing domestic exploration and production, acquiring critical mineral assets abroad, and efficiently managing trade and stock. The event underscored the importance of focused research and development, skilling initiatives, and production-linked incentives for recycling critical minerals, promoting a holistic and innovative approach to securing India’s mineral needs.

The insights and strategies developed during the seminar are expected to guide the successful implementation of the National Critical Minerals Mission. By fostering collaboration across sectors, the Mission aims to ensure a steady supply of critical minerals, which are indispensable for India’s technological advancement and sustainable economic growth.

The National Critical Minerals Mission represents a bold step towards achieving India’s green energy goals and securing its position as a global leader in the critical minerals sector. As the country moves forward with this initiative, it is set to strengthen its self-reliance in key raw materials, ensuring a robust and sustainable future for its industries and economy.
