India-Egypt Joint Special Forces Exercise CYCLONE Kicks Off in Egypt

Anshas: The 2nd edition of the India-Egypt Joint Special Forces Exercise CYCLONE has commenced, with the Indian Army contingent, consisting of 25 personnel from The Parachute Regiment (Special Forces), arriving in Egypt. The exercise is scheduled to take place at Anshas, Egypt, from January 22nd to February 1st, 2024, following the successful inaugural edition held in India last year.

The Egyptian contingent, represented by 25 personnel from the Egyptian Commando Squadron and Egyptian Airborne Platoon, will join their Indian counterparts in this joint training initiative.

The primary aim of Exercise CYCLONE is to familiarize both sides with each other’s operating procedures, focusing on Special Operations in desert and semi-desert terrains under Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter. The exercise is strategically designed to enhance bilateral military cooperation and strengthen the bond between the Indian and Egyptian armies through discussions and tactical military drills.

The exercise will unfold in three phases. The first phase will involve Military Exhibitions and Tactical Interactions, followed by the second phase focusing on training in Improvised Explosive Device (IED) handling, counter-IED tactics, and Combat First Aid. The third and final phase will encompass a Joint Tactical Exercise centered around Fighting in Built-up Areas and Hostage Rescue Scenarios.

Exercise CYCLONE provides a valuable opportunity for both contingents to reinforce their bonds, exchange best practices, and act as a platform to achieve shared security objectives. The exercise is expected to foster stronger bilateral relations between the two friendly nations.
