India Celebrates 75 Years of Hindi as Official Language with Commemorative Stamp

New Delhi: India marked the 75th anniversary of Hindi being adopted as the official language of the Union with a grand celebration on Hindi Diwas. This historic occasion, known as the Diamond Jubilee of Rajbhasha, commemorates the decision taken by the Constituent Assembly on September 14, 1949, when Hindi, written in the Devanagari script, was designated as the official language of India.

In a ceremony held at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi, Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation, Amit Shah, unveiled a commemorative postage stamp to honor this significant milestone. The stamp, issued by the Department of Posts, is a tribute to Hindi’s role in uniting the country and preserving its diverse linguistic heritage.

Union Minister of Communications and Development of Northern Region, Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, highlighted the importance of the commemorative stamp. He remarked, “On this historic occasion of Hindi completing 75 years as India’s official language, the release of this commemorative postage stamp by Shri Amit Shah is a fitting tribute. The stamp celebrates Hindi’s contribution to carrying forward India’s culture and history and underscores its role in building a New and Viksit Bharat. I am confident that this stamp will serve as a reminder of Hindi’s significance in fostering unity and peace both within the country and across the world. Jai Hind!”

Since its establishment in 1975, the Department of Official Language under the Ministry of Home Affairs has played a crucial role in promoting the use of Hindi in official matters. The Diamond Jubilee celebrations serve as a testament to Hindi’s enduring presence in India’s administrative and cultural landscape over the past 75 years.
