India announces diplomatic boycott of Beijing Winter Olympics Games

New Delhi: India on Friday has decided to boycott the opening and closing ceremony of the Winter Olympics Games to be held in Beijing.

The decision was taken after the Chinese government included a People’s Liberation Army commander involved in the June 15, 2020 Galwan Valley clash as the torchbearer. Qi Fabao, the PLA regiment commander was injured during the Galwan clash.

Calling the decision ‘regrettable’, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said, “It is indeed regrettable that the Chinese side has chosen to politicize an event like the Olympics.”

State broadcaster Doordarshan also announced it will not telecast the opening and closing ceremonies live.

From India only one athlete, skier Arif Khan is participating in the games.
