Tokyo: The Governments of India and Japan signed a Memorandum of Implementation (MoI) for the co-development of the Unified Complex Radio Antenna (UNICORN) mast for the Indian Navy.
The signing ceremony took place at the Embassy of India in Tokyo on November 15, 2024, with Sibi George, Ambassador of India to Japan, and Ishikawa Takeshi, Commissioner of the Acquisition Technology and Logistics Agency (ATLA) under Japan’s Ministry of Defense, representing their respective nations.
The UNICORN mast is an advanced integrated communication system designed to enhance the stealth characteristics of naval platforms. The system, to be jointly developed, will be fitted onboard ships of the Indian Navy, marking a significant advancement in naval capabilities.
The collaboration will involve Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) in India, working closely with Japanese experts, showcasing a model of co-development and co-production that leverages the technological strengths of both nations.
This agreement represents the first instance of co-development and co-production of defense equipment between India and Japan, highlighting the growing strategic partnership between the two countries.
The Indian Navy has prioritized the induction of such cutting-edge systems to bolster its operational efficiency and align with modern warfare requirements.
The MoI builds on the robust defense ties between India and Japan, underscoring a shared commitment to regional security and technological innovation. Both nations have been actively engaging in joint military exercises, defense technology exchanges, and strategic dialogues in recent years.
This collaboration is expected to set a precedent for future defense projects, fostering mutual growth in defense manufacturing and innovation.
As the world watches this historic partnership unfold, the co-development of the UNICORN mast symbolizes a new chapter in India-Japan relations, rooted in trust, shared values, and a vision for a secure and prosperous Indo-Pacific.
