India and Japan Sign JPY 191.7 Billion Loan Agreements for Infrastructure, Environment, and Investment Projects

New Delhi: The Government of India and the Government of Japan have signed loan agreements worth JPY 191.736 billion for six key projects under Japan’s Official Development Assistance (ODA) to India. The agreements, signed in New Delhi between the Government of India and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), span diverse sectors including forest management, water supply, urban transport, aquaculture, biodiversity conservation, and investment promotion.

The Tamil Nadu Investment Promotion Program (TNIPP-III) aims to attract foreign and domestic investments in a sustainable and inclusive manner, providing quality jobs and promoting emerging sectors. The Chennai Seawater Desalination Plant project will ensure a safe and reliable water supply, improving living conditions for residents, including economically weaker sections, and enhancing the investment environment in the Chennai Metropolitan Area.

The Project for Capacity Enhancement for Effective Forest Management is focused on strengthening forest policies through research, pilot projects, institutional improvements, and biodiversity conservation. The Delhi Metro Rail expansion (Phase 4 Additional Corridors) will contribute to regional economic growth, traffic decongestion, and pollution reduction, reinforcing JICA’s longstanding support for Delhi’s mass rapid transit system.

In Assam, the aquaculture promotion project will boost aquaculture production, enhance the fisheries supply chain, and support rural livelihoods by strengthening the fisheries sector. Similarly, the Punjab Biodiversity and Natural Resources Conservation Project aims to increase tree cover, improve biodiversity conservation, manage wetlands, and promote climate change mitigation measures while supporting sustainable livelihoods.

India and Japan have shared a strong bilateral development partnership since 1958, with economic cooperation as a key pillar of their relationship. Over the years, this partnership has strengthened, consolidating their Strategic and Global Partnership. The latest loan agreements further reinforce Japan’s commitment to India’s sustainable development, infrastructure expansion, and environmental conservation, fostering deeper economic and diplomatic ties between the two nations.
