India and EU Strengthen Collaboration with First-Ever Workshop on Electric Vehicles Charging Technology

Pune: In a bid to accelerate sustainable transport solutions and deepen their strategic partnership, India and the European Union (EU) have successfully held the first-ever India-EU Workshop on Electric Vehicles (EV) Charging Technology. The workshop, organized under the auspices of the India-EU Trade and Technology Council (TTC) Working Group 2 on Green and Clean Energy Technologies, took place in Pune, India, and was a pivotal step in fostering harmonized solutions for electro-mobility.

The workshop brought together key stakeholders including policy-makers, electro-mobility industry representatives, standardization associations, and technical testing facilities to address the critical aspects of EV charging. Among the notable participants were Dr. Monoranjan Mohanty and Dr. Hafsa Ahmad from the Office of the Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India, as well as experts from the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI), the Bureau of Indian Standards, and the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC). Dr. Liliana Pasecinic, Dr. Harald Scholz, Dirk Groβmann, and Dr. Saki Gerassis from the European Commission also participated virtually.

The workshop was a significant milestone in the agenda of TTC Working Group 2, which focuses on fostering green and clean energy technologies. The event will be discussed at the upcoming 2nd TTC Ministerial meeting in New Delhi on February 28, 2025.

Organized by ARAI and JRC, with support from the Office of the Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India, the workshop provided an in-depth platform for technical and policy dialogues on EV charging infrastructure. Discussions centered around the development of common standards for EV charging and how to address the communication and interoperability requirements that are essential for creating a seamless charging experience for users.

Key topics of the workshop included the future strategic directions for sustainable mobility in both India and the EU, and how both regions could collaborate to create economies of scale for the EV industry. Special focus was placed on standardization in the charging infrastructure and pre-normative research for testing systems. The event highlighted how India and the EU could harmonize testing solutions and exchange knowledge in the growing field of electro-mobility.

One of the highlights of the event was the opportunity for participants to visit the ARAI laboratory, which gave them firsthand exposure to India’s cutting-edge EV and electro-mobility testing facilities.

As the global shift toward cleaner energy solutions continues, this India-EU collaboration on EV charging standards marks a significant step in the shared mission to enhance sustainable transport solutions. By aligning the charging infrastructure and improving interoperability, India and the EU are poised to lead the way in the global EV revolution.

With this successful workshop, both regions have reinforced their commitment to working together for a cleaner and more sustainable future. The event has set the stage for continued cooperation and exchange between India and the EU, creating pathways for more synchronized solutions in the electric vehicle ecosystem.
