India and Bhutan Strengthen Healthcare Ties with Inauguration of Mother and Child Hospital

Thimphu: To enhance the healthcare infrastructure and services in Bhutan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and H.E. Tshering Tobgay, Prime Minister of Bhutan, jointly inaugurated the Gyaltsuen Jetsun Pema Wangchuck Mother and Child Hospital in Thimphu. The state-of-the-art hospital, built with the assistance of the Government of India, marks a milestone in the longstanding partnership between the two nations in the healthcare sector.

The inauguration ceremony witnessed the unveiling of the 150-bedded hospital, equipped with cutting-edge facilities and amenities aimed at bolstering maternal and child healthcare services in Bhutan. Constructed in two phases, the first phase of the hospital, operational since 2019, was built at a cost of Rs. 22 Crores. The completion of the second phase, undertaken as part of the 12th Five Year Plan, involved an investment of Rs. 119 Crores and culminated in the realization of the comprehensive healthcare facility.

The newly inaugurated hospital exemplifies the commitment of both India and Bhutan towards prioritizing the well-being of mothers and children. With specialized departments including Pediatrics, Gynecology and Obstetrics, Anesthesiology, Operation Theatre, Neonatal Intensive Care, and Pediatric Intensive Care, the hospital is poised to deliver high-quality healthcare services to the citizens of Bhutan.

The Gyaltsuen Jetsun Pema Wangchuck Mother and Child Hospital stands as a testament to the enduring partnership between India and Bhutan, particularly in the realm of healthcare. By leveraging shared expertise and resources, both nations have demonstrated their unwavering commitment to advancing the health and welfare of the people of Bhutan.
