IFFI 2024 Showcases Global Cinematic Gems with ‘For Rana’ and ‘The New Year that Never Came’

Goa: The 55th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) showcased two powerful films that promise to leave an indelible mark on audiences and critics alike. The Iranian film For Rana, directed by Iman Yazdi, and the Romanian entry The New Year that Never Came, helmed by Bogdan Mureșanu, are among the standout contenders in IFFI’s prestigious categories. For Rana is vying for the coveted ‘ICFT UNESCO Gandhi Medal’, while The New Year that Never Came competes in the ‘International Competition’ category. These films transcend traditional storytelling to explore themes of self-discovery, sacrifice, and the oppressive forces of history.

In a media interaction, Iman Yazdi shared that For Rana is an exploration of the struggles faced by the middle class and the profound impact of societal expectations on personal choices. The film follows the poignant and complex relationship between a father and son, where decisions are shaped by external pressures. “The choice of the thriller genre was intentional,” said Yazdi, “to capture the intricate dynamic of how people are influenced by the circumstances they find themselves in.” He also expressed his admiration for the Indian audience, remarking on the genuine passion and appreciation for cinema that he witnessed at IFFI. “The connection people here feel toward films is unique and exciting,” Yazdi added.

Bogdan Mureșanu, director of The New Year that Never Came, reflected on the significance of setting his tragicomedy against the backdrop of the Romanian Revolution—a landmark event and one of the few televised revolutions in history. Mureșanu spoke about the extensive research required to accurately portray the era and the irony embedded in the story, which motivated him to create the film. He shared, “The story’s irony is what drew me in. It’s a window into the multifaceted emotions and chaos of history.” Discussing his experience at IFFI, Mureșanu emphasized cinema’s power as a universal language, fostering connections and mutual understanding among audiences from diverse cultures.

Both directors showcased films that blend deep social commentary with compelling narratives, offering viewers a chance to explore historical and personal themes through art. Their participation in IFFI 2024 highlights the festival’s dedication to bringing global perspectives and exemplary storytelling to the forefront.
