Hirakud Dam Reopens to Tourists After 24-Day Security Restriction

Bhubaneswar: The iconic Hirakud Dam in Odisha’s Sambalpur district, known as Asia’s longest earthen dam, has reopened to tourists after a 24-day security restriction was lifted today. The restriction, which had been in place since May 9, was imposed amid heightened national security concerns linked to growing tensions between India and Pakistan.

With the restriction now withdrawn, tourists can once again visit and enjoy the scenic and historic site, although certain restricted zones will continue to remain off-limits. The reopening comes as a relief to locals and tourists alike, who had been eagerly waiting for access to the popular destination to resume.

The Sambalpur district administration, in close coordination with national security agencies, has instituted enhanced security measures to ensure the safety of visitors. According to officials, a high-level security protocol is now in place, featuring round-the-clock surveillance and deployment of additional personnel.

To bolster vigilance, security forces stationed at the dam site have been equipped with modern weaponry, including Light Machine Guns (LMGs), and advanced surveillance tools. These measures are aimed at deterring any potential threats and maintaining a secure environment for tourists.

District authorities reiterated that the temporary closure had been a precautionary measure undertaken in the interest of public safety and that there was never any cause for alarm. Officials assured the public that with stringent safeguards now implemented, the dam premises are safe for public access.
