Groundbreaking Collaboration: Ministry of Agriculture & Wadhwani Foundation Sign MoU for AI-Driven Digital Agriculture

New Delhi: In a significant stride towards the digitization of agriculture, a Tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was inked today in New Delhi between the National Farmers’ Welfare Programme Implementation Society, IndiaAI under Digital India Corporation, and Wadhwani Foundation. The MoU, signed in the presence of esteemed dignitaries including Shri Manoj Ahuja, Secretary, and Shri Prakash Kumar, CEO of Wadhwani Institute of Technology and Policy, signifies a collaborative effort to revolutionize India’s agricultural landscape through the strategic integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Shri Manoj Ahuja, Secretary, highlighted the game-changing role of AI in agriculture, emphasizing its capabilities in advisories, feedback collection, crop monitoring, yield prediction, pest control, and resource optimization. He stressed the importance of leveraging AI to address challenges faced by farmers, setting the stage for a more efficient and technology-driven agricultural sector.

Expressing delight, Shri Prakash Kumar underscored the groundbreaking journey ahead, envisioning a future where innovation and knowledge contribute to a more prosperous and food-secure India. The collaboration aims to establish India as a global leader in AI-driven digital agriculture transformation, aligning with the Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology’s (MeitY) National Plan for AI.

According to the terms of the MoU, Wadhwani Foundation will provide critical support in formulating and executing an AI strategy, marking a pivotal moment in India’s agricultural landscape. The collaboration includes the institutionalization of an AI cell within the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare, showcasing a commitment to the widespread adoption of advanced technologies in addressing farmers’ challenges.

The Ministry, as a pioneering force in AI integration, has championed the India Digital Ecosystem Architecture (InDEA) 2.0’s network approach, designed by the Ministry of Electronics & IT. Notable milestones include the development of ‘Kisan e-Mitra,’ an AI-powered chatbot catering to farmers’ queries about the PM Kisan Samman Nidhi scheme. The solution, accessible in multiple languages, has garnered over 21 lakh farmers’ engagement within two months.

Furthermore, the Ministry is actively collaborating with the private sector to develop a National Pest Surveillance System. Utilizing AI and Machine Learning (ML) models, the system detects crop issues, providing timely information to farmers for swift intervention. This initiative is poised to enhance crop health, potentially boosting yields and improving farmers’ livelihoods.

The collaboration between the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare and Wadhwani Foundation marks a transformative step towards harnessing AI’s potential for the benefit of Indian farmers, ultimately contributing to the digitization and advancement of the agricultural sector.
