Govt Removes Export Duty on Onions to Ensure Better Prices for Farmers

New Delhi: To support farmers, Union Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan announced the complete removal of export duty on onions. The decision, taken by the Modi government, aims to secure fair and remunerative prices for farmers by ensuring their produce reaches global markets duty-free.

Addressing the media, Chouhan emphasized that the Modi government is a farmer-friendly government, committed to providing fair prices for agricultural produce. He recalled that initially, a 40% export duty was imposed on onions to stabilize domestic supply. However, as onion prices began to fall, reducing farmers’ earnings, the government first reduced the export duty to 20%. Now, in a decisive step to support onion growers, the government has decided to eliminate the export duty entirely.

“The removal of export duty on onions will enable our farmers’ hard-earned produce to reach global markets without additional cost burdens, ensuring they receive better and more remunerative prices,” Chouhan stated. He reiterated that safeguarding farmers’ interests remains a top priority for the government, and this measure will enhance India’s competitiveness in the international onion trade.
