Government Hosts National Review Conference on Social Justice and Empowerment Initiatives

New Delhi: The Department of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India, organized a two-day National Review Conference at Bharat Mandapam, Summit Hall, Pragati Maidan, New Delhi, on February 12th and 13th, 2024. Chaired by the Secretary, Shri Saurabh Garg, the conference brought together Principal Secretaries/Secretaries from all States/Union Territories, along with senior officers from the Department.

The conference covered crucial discussions aimed at providing support to various marginalized groups, including Scheduled Castes (SCs), Other Backward Classes (OBCs), Economically Weaker Section (EWS), and Denotified Tribes (DNTs). The sessions addressed the needs of senior citizens, victims of substance abuse, challenges faced by the transgender community, and issues concerning sanitation workers.

Key initiatives were highlighted during the event, including the launch of the National Portal for Transgender Persons, emphasizing proactive measures to set up shelter homes, issue certificates through the portal, and create a discrimination-free environment for transgender individuals. The conference also discussed the implementation of schemes such as Atal Vayo Abhyuday Yojana (AVYAY) and the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007, emphasizing the well-being of senior citizens across India.

The Rashtriya Vayoshri Yojana (RVY) was acknowledged for providing assistance to senior citizens suffering from age-related disabilities. Under this scheme, assistive living devices have been distributed to individuals, enabling them to regain near-normal functionality despite disabilities.

The Elder Line initiative, dedicated to senior citizens, was presented as a comprehensive platform offering essential services. The toll-free number, 14567, allows seniors to access assistance for various issues, from medical referrals to legal guidance and emotional support.

The Scheme for Economic Empowerment of DNTs (SEED) received praise for fostering economic independence, offering coaching, health coverage, and financial aid for housing construction. The Credit Support to Sanitation Workers initiative by NSKFDC was also commended for facilitating financial resources for sanitation workers.

The conference included discussions on the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan (NMBA), focusing on youth and educational institutions. The implementation of the SC/ST (PoA) Act, 1989, was reviewed, with updates on the charge sheet filing rate and the pendency of cases in courts.

The latter part of the conference covered discussions on Pradhan Mantri Dakshta Aur Kushalta Sampann Hitgrahi (PM-Daksh), showcasing significant achievements in training and placement.
