From Dream to Reality: 49-Year-Old Tamil Nadu Woman Set to Begin MBBS Journey

Chennai: Defying age, expectations, and life’s many hurdles, a 49-year-old woman from Tenkasi, Tamil Nadu, is preparing to don a white coat and step into a medical classroom—chasing a dream she has held close for over a decade.

Amuthavalli, a physiotherapist by profession, had always aspired to become a doctor. However, family responsibilities and financial limitations kept her dream on hold for nearly 15 years. It was only while assisting her daughter with NEET preparations that she dared to believe in that dream again.

Encouraged by her daughter’s support, Amuthavalli decided to sit for the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) alongside her. “I had almost given up on the idea of studying medicine,” she said. “But as I studied with my daughter, I thought—why not give it a try? She gave me the strength to pursue it.”

Scoring 147 in NEET, Amuthavalli qualified under the Persons with Disabilities (PwD) category and has now secured a seat at Government Medical College in Virudhunagar. Her daughter, Samyuktha Krupalini, scored 460 and is currently attending counselling for admission under the general category.

Interestingly, the mother-daughter pair has decided to attend different medical colleges, even if they receive offers from the same one. “We believe studying separately will help us stay focused and build our own paths,” Amuthavalli explained with a smile.

Their story has become the talk of their hometown, inspiring residents and social media alike. Many have applauded Amuthavalli’s unwavering spirit and her decision to return to academics at a time when most people her age are planning retirement or focused solely on family.

Medical professionals have also praised her achievement, calling it a testament to lifelong learning. “Her journey proves that passion and persistence can overcome any barrier,” said a senior doctor at Virudhunagar Medical College.

As both women prepare to embark on their MBBS journeys this year, their story stands as a beacon of hope for those who believe it’s too late to begin again.
