New Delhi: Former Chief Minister of Sikkim, Pawan Chamling, was reportedly subjected to an attack by supporters of the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) while en route to a meeting at Kishan Market on Monday. The incident purportedly unfolded following Chamling’s participation in a puja at Namchi Bazar.
According to a press release issued by the Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF), hundreds of SKM supporters allegedly physically assaulted Chamling and made attempts to suffocate him in broad daylight. The SDF supporters present at the scene intervened and managed to push back the assailants. However, several individuals, including women, sustained injuries during the altercation and required medical attention at a nearby hospital.
The SDF vehemently condemned the attack, denouncing it as a blatant assault on democracy. The party accused PS Golay, the leader of SKM, of masterminding such violent tactics against opposition candidates.
The incident has raised concerns about the escalating political tensions in Sikkim ahead of the upcoming elections. The SDF has called for a thorough investigation into the matter and urged authorities to take swift action against those responsible for the assault.
Meanwhile, Chamling has expressed his resolve to continue his political engagements despite the alleged attack, reaffirming his commitment to serving the people of Sikkim and upholding democratic principles.
The purported assault on Pawan Chamling underscores the need for political parties to adhere to peaceful and democratic means of engagement, fostering an environment conducive to free and fair elections.
