Finance Minister Sitharaman Unveils Housing Scheme for Middle-Class Empowerment in Interim Budget 2024-25

New Delhi: Union Minister for Finance and Corporate Affairs, Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman, presented the Interim Budget 2024-25 in Parliament, announcing a pioneering scheme aimed at assisting deserving sections of the middle class. The scheme is designed to empower those “living in rented houses, or slums, or chawls and unauthorized colonies” to realize their dream of buying or building their own houses.

During her budget presentation, Finance Minister Sitharaman underscored the remarkable achievements of the PM Awas Yojana (Grameen). Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the implementation of the scheme continued, and the government is on the brink of achieving the target of three crore houses. She further disclosed plans to take up an additional two crore houses in the next five years, anticipating the growing demand resulting from an increase in the number of families.

Emphasizing the government’s commitment to an all-encompassing approach to development, Minister Sitharaman stated, “The Government is working with an approach to development that is all-round, all-pervasive and all-inclusive (सर्वांगीण, सर्वस्पर्शी और सर्वसमावेशी),” with the overarching goal of transforming India into a ‘Viksit Bharat’ by 2047.

The housing scheme, yet to be named, is set to bring about significant positive change in the lives of those residing in rented houses, slums, chawls, and unauthorized colonies. By facilitating the acquisition or construction of their own houses, the government aims to uplift the middle class and provide them with a stable foundation for their future.

As the budget proposal sets the tone for a more inclusive and empowered middle class, the government’s commitment to housing initiatives aligns with its broader vision of holistic development. The announcement reflects a comprehensive strategy to address housing needs while acknowledging the challenges posed by the pandemic and remaining steadfast in achieving long-term goals for a prosperous and developed India.
