EU and India Collaborate on Battery Recycling Technologies for Electric Vehicles

New Delhi: In a bid to foster innovation and cooperation in the clean and green technologies sector, the European Union (EU) and India have launched an Expression of Interest (EoI) for startups specializing in Battery Recycling Technologies for Electric Vehicles (EVs). This initiative aims to enhance collaboration between European and Indian Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) and startups, promoting the circularity of rare materials and advancing towards carbon neutrality in both regions.

The matchmaking event, announced today, is part of the broader India-EU Trade & Technology Council (TTC) initiative, established on April 25, 2022, in New Delhi. It seeks to promote a sustainable agenda and strengthen economic relations between the EU and India.

The EoI for the Matchmaking Event provides a platform for startups and SMEs from India and the EU working on EV Battery Recycling Technologies to showcase their innovative solutions. Twelve innovators, six from each region, will be selected to pitch their ideas during the Matchmaking Event scheduled for June 2024. Following their presentations, six finalists (three from each region) will have the opportunity to visit India and the EU, respectively.

The event aims to identify, support, and promote startups and SMEs dedicated to advancing battery recycling technologies for EVs. It also seeks to facilitate cooperation, explore trade avenues, deepen customer relations, and explore investment opportunities for the selected startups and SMEs.

The Matchmaking Event, under India-EU TTC Working Group 2, provides Indian startups and SMEs with an exclusive platform to demonstrate their expertise in battery recycling technologies. It offers them the chance to establish strategic alliances with EU counterparts, accelerating the development of advanced battery recycling techniques focused on waste minimization and resource sustainability.

Professor Ajay Kumar Sood, Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India, emphasized the goal of harmonizing efforts with EU innovators to develop battery recycling solutions, fostering sustainability and innovation in a flourishing circular economy.

Mr. Marc Lemaître, Director-General for Research and Innovation at the European Commission, highlighted the significance of collaboration in the EV Battery Recycling industry, encouraging innovators from the EU to explore potential collaborations with their Indian counterparts.

Interested startups and SMEs from India and the EU are invited to submit their Expressions of Interest (EoI) by April 30, 2024. For more information on the event and the application process, interested innovators may visit the official websites provided by the Indian and EU authorities.
