Empowering Youth Champions: OCOY kicks off in Bhubaneswar, Igniting Climate Conversations

Bhubaneswar: A three-day Odisha Conference of Youth (OCOY) kicked off, focusing the issue of climate change. Organized by the Youth4Water Plus platform and supported by the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change, Y20, G20, the Animal Climate Health Save Movement, and UN agencies, the conference brings together various stakeholders to address pressing environmental concerns.

William Hanlon Jr., Chief of the UNICEF Odisha Field Office, addressed the participants and underscored the pivotal role of young people in the fight against climate change. He emphasized UNICEF’s commitment to nurturing active engagement from young individuals to find sustainable solutions. Hanlon stated, “Climate action is an opportunity to reshape our lives and pave the way for a resilient and sustainable future.”

Climate activist Archana Soren, participating virtually, highlighted the importance of indigenous communities in climate action, advocating for their leadership in decision-making processes at all levels.

Anmol Sovit, the esteemed Chairperson of Y20, radiated excitement regarding the collaboration with Youth4Water Plus. He stressed the congruence of the conference’s objectives with the inherent values of today’s youth, underscoring their dedication to crafting a planet that thrives sustainably.

OCOY boldly pioneers as the state’s maiden vegan conference, an innovative approach that resonates harmoniously with the central theme of environmental sustainability. This distinctive stance not only underscores the conference’s commitment to addressing climate change but also spotlights the pivotal role that dietary choices play in the broader context of mitigating global environmental challenges.

The conference drew participation from approximately 150 youths across Odisha, marking a significant step toward fostering climate awareness and action.
