New Delhi: Elon Musk, the visionary entrepreneur behind Tesla and SpaceX, announced on Thursday the activation of the Community Notes feature by his X platform in India. This move comes as the country gears up for its upcoming general elections.
The Community Notes feature, described as a user-based fact-checking program, aims to foster a more informed online environment by allowing users to collaboratively add context to potentially misleading posts.
In a tweet, Musk revealed the activation of Community Notes in India and extended a warm welcome to new contributors joining the platform from the country. “Community Notes now active in India,” Musk tweeted.
The X platform also emphasized its commitment to maintaining the quality and helpfulness of the notes contributed by users from diverse perspectives. “As always, we’ll monitor quality to ensure that notes are found helpful by people from different points of view,” stated the platform.
This initiative marks a significant step towards promoting transparency and combating misinformation, particularly in the context of the upcoming general elections in India.
The X platform, owned by Musk, introduced Community Notes globally in December 2022 with the goal of empowering users to add valuable context to posts. Contributors have the ability to leave notes on any post, and if a note receives sufficient positive ratings from contributors representing various viewpoints, it will be publicly displayed on the post.
It’s worth noting that posts featuring Community Notes will not be labeled, removed, or addressed by X unless they violate the platform’s rules.
