Bhubaneswar: East Coast Railway (ECoR) has stepped up its renewable energy push, with solar installations across its railway establishments generating over 67 lakh units of electricity and helping the zone save around ₹4.51 crore during the current financial year up to August 2026.
ECoR has so far installed a total solar capacity of 486.84 kWp across its three divisions—Khurda Road, Sambalpur and Rayagada—as part of efforts to reduce dependence on conventional power sources and lower carbon emissions.
The Khurda Road Division accounts for the largest share of the installed capacity at 326.84 kWp, followed by 150 kWp in Sambalpur and 10 kWp in Rayagada.
The renewable energy drive has also expanded to railway stations, with 232 stations across ECoR now equipped with rooftop solar installations.
Of these, 110 stations are in Khurda Road Division, 68 in Sambalpur Division and 54 in Rayagada Division.
The railway zone is continuing to explore opportunities to install solar power systems at more stations, offices, workshops and other establishments.
The existing solar infrastructure has made a significant contribution to ECoR’s renewable energy generation.
During 2026-27, up to August 2026, the railway zone generated 67,02,707.98 units of solar power from its installations.
The increased generation is helping ECoR reduce its reliance on conventional electricity while promoting cleaner energy consumption across its establishments.
Apart from reducing the environmental impact of railway operations, the shift towards solar energy is also delivering financial benefits.
ECoR has recorded approximately ₹4.51 crore in savings during the period under consideration as a result of solar power generation.
The railway zone said the figures demonstrate the dual benefits of renewable energy adoption—cutting carbon emissions while reducing energy expenditure.
ECoR is continuing to identify additional opportunities for expanding its renewable energy infrastructure as part of its broader energy conservation efforts.
The increased use of solar power across stations and other railway establishments is aimed at improving energy efficiency, reducing carbon emissions and supporting more sustainable railway operations.
The initiatives are aligned with the broader vision of Indian Railways to promote energy efficiency, environmental sustainability and greater reliance on renewable sources of energy.
