Aizawl: In a major blow to drug traffickers operating along the Indo-Myanmar border, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) seized 9.72 kilograms of Methamphetamine tablets valued at ₹9.72 crore in the international illicit drug market. The seizure was made from a Mahindra XUV500 vehicle at Seling on the Aizawl-Champhai Highway (NH-6) in Mizoram on Thursday.
Acting on specific intelligence, DRI officials intercepted the vehicle and discovered 10 packets of the contraband cleverly concealed in a hidden chamber behind the rear seat. The vehicle and the seized drugs were taken into custody, and one individual has been arrested under the provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the Methamphetamine tablets were smuggled into India from Myanmar through the Zokhawthar sector of the Indo-Myanmar border, a route that has increasingly become a conduit for drug trafficking in the Northeast.
This latest operation adds to the growing list of high-value drug busts in the region. Since January 2025, DRI has seized drugs worth over ₹72 crore in Mizoram alone, including large quantities of Methamphetamine and Heroin. Seven individuals have been arrested in connection with these cases.
Officials noted that the NDPS Act prescribes stringent penalties for drug trafficking, including rigorous imprisonment of up to 10 years. The DRI reaffirmed its commitment to intensifying anti-narcotics operations, particularly along vulnerable border areas, to combat the rising threat of drug smuggling.
