DRDO Successfully Tests Supersonic Missile-Assisted Release of Torpedo (SMART) System

Bhubaneswar: The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully conducted a flight test of the Supersonic Missile-Assisted Release of Torpedo (SMART) system at approximately 0830 hrs on May 01, 2024, from Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Island off the coast of Odisha. The SMART system, a next-generation missile-based lightweight torpedo delivery system, aims to significantly enhance the anti-submarine warfare capabilities of the Indian Navy, extending far beyond the conventional range of lightweight torpedoes.

The canister-based SMART system comprises advanced subsystems, including a two-stage solid propulsion system, electromechanical actuator system, precision inertial navigation system, and parachute-based release system for the advanced lightweight torpedo payload.

The missile was launched from a ground mobile launcher, validating several state-of-the-art mechanisms such as symmetric separation, ejection, and velocity control during the test. The successful flight test marks a significant milestone in the development and validation of the SMART system, demonstrating its efficacy and operational readiness.

Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh congratulated DRDO and its industry partners on the successful flight test of the SMART system, highlighting its potential to bolster the Indian Navy’s capabilities. “The development of the system will further enhance the strength of our Navy,” he remarked, acknowledging the pivotal role of such advanced technologies in ensuring national security.

Dr. Samir V Kamat, Secretary, Department of Defence Research and Development, and Chairman of DRDO, commended the synergistic efforts of the SMART team and urged them to uphold their commitment to excellence. He emphasized the importance of continued innovation and collaboration in advancing indigenous defense technologies to meet the evolving security challenges.
