DRDO Successfully Conducts Three Flight Trials of VSHORADS Missile System in Odisha

Bhubaneswar: The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully conducted three consecutive flight trials of the Very Short-Range Air Defence System (VSHORADS) off the coast of Odisha at Chandipur. The trials demonstrated the missile’s precision in neutralizing low-flying aerial threats, including drones.

The tests were carried out against high-speed targets flying at very low altitudes, with all three missiles intercepting and destroying their intended targets. The trials were conducted in final deployment configuration, with two field operators managing weapon readiness, target acquisition, and missile firing.

Flight data recorded by telemetry, electro-optical tracking systems, and radar deployed by the Integrated Test Range (ITR), Chandipur, confirmed the pinpoint accuracy of VSHORADS. The system has been designed to effectively counter aerial threats, particularly drones, making it a significant asset for India’s defense capabilities.

Developed by Research Centre Imarat (RCI) in collaboration with other DRDO laboratories and industry partners, VSHORADS is a Man-Portable Air Defence System (MANPADS) capable of serving the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force.

Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh congratulated DRDO, the Armed Forces, and industry partners, calling the successful tests a major milestone in strengthening India’s defense capabilities. Dr. Samir V Kamat, Secretary, Department of Defence R&D and Chairman DRDO, also lauded the teams involved, emphasizing the importance of indigenous advancements in air defense technology.

The successful trials mark a significant step towards the induction of VSHORADS, reinforcing India’s self-reliance in developing state-of-the-art air defense systems.
